E-commerce paper mailers: which kraft grade survives a five-stop delivery chain
Tear resistance, water resistance and the new generation of fully recyclable mailer grades winning Amazon-tier audits.
Marketplace operators are pushing converters away from poly mailers toward paper. The challenge is real: a paper mailer must survive sorting belts, weather, multiple handovers, and arrive presentable. Most kraft grades fail this test. A few are engineered for it.
The five-stop reality
A typical e-commerce parcel passes through: pick-and-pack belt, induction scanner, sorting carousel, line-haul truck, and last-mile van. Each stage is a tear, abrasion or moisture risk.
Spec sheet for a winning mailer
- Grammage 90–120 g/m² kraft, often with one ply of macerated tissue inner cushioning.
- Tear resistance (ISO 1974) minimum 700 mN MD / 900 mN CD.
- Water resistance: surface treatment or wet-strength resin, recyclable in normal paper streams.
- Tear strip integrated, with reinforced closure.
Recyclability stamp
Major marketplaces are auditing for kerbside recyclability. A mailer with PE lamination will be rejected. Modern wet-strength chemistries pass these audits while still surviving rain.
